What is a downstem
The downstem is a smoking accessory that connects the bowl to the main chamber of the bong. Typically a glass tube, its function is to transport smoke from the bowl to the main chamber for cooling and filtration, enhancing the flavor and smoothness of the smoke. It is an essential component of a bong setup.
Common downstem sizes
The downstem has additional measurements that are distinct from other glass components—length and joint size. When measuring the length of a downstem, start from the bottom of the frosted section and measure all the way to the end, including any diffusers. The length should be sufficient to reach the water within the bong's base, but not so long that it touches the bottom. About half an inch below the water surface is typically adequate.
As for joint size, this refers to the circumference of the stem that forms a seal with the bong. Common joint sizes include: 10mm, 14mm, 18mm.

• Regular Cleaning: Regularly cleaning the downstem is key to keeping it in optimal condition. Cleaning the downstem is straightforward. First, remove the downstem and place it into a plastic bag containing isopropyl alcohol and a bit of coarse salt or your chosen cleaning solution. Shake for a few minutes, observing the grime dissolve. If particularly dirty, let it soak for approximately five to ten minutes. Thoroughly rinse and allow it to dry.
